Recently, the Cultural Bonding Society (CBS) held another event centred around Australian culture, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of this fascinating country. If you missed this audiovisual feast, come and take a look at the notes from our class representatives!

Part I Location and environment of Australia

First of all, our teacher William used a series of vivid images to inform us about Australia’s geographical location, climate diversity, and unique time zones. Australia is a land of wonders, renowned for its distinctive natural landscapes, rich wildlife, and multicultural heritage. Situated in the Southern Hemisphere, Australia is the only country in the world that covers an entire continent, located between the South Pacific and Indian Oceans, halfway between Asia and Antarctica. The Australian continent, the world's largest island, is also the smallest continent.

Part II Australia’s ancient indigenous people

Next, we learned about the Aboriginal culture of Australia, which lies at the heart of the country’s cultural traditions. The didgeridoo was a delightful surprise for us. This instrument not only reflects the profound connection of Australia’s Indigenous peoples to the land but also serves as an important expression of the country’s cultural diversity.

Part III Other distinctive features in Australia

Finally, William concluded this wonderful exotic journey with amusing Australian slang. Australian slang is a very interesting aspect of Australian culture, reflecting the locals' sense of humour and straightforward nature. For example:

flat out - 非常忙。

No worries -

In 1788, the British set up the first penal colony in Sydney for prisoners to help ease overcrowding in their jails. Soon after, the number of immigrants began to rise, eventually exceeding the local Indigenous population. During this time, Australian English started to develop separately from British English. By the 1820s, the English spoken by those born in Australia had its own unique pronunciation and vocabulary. The gold rush that began in 1851 allowed Australian English to take in words from other languages, including American English. The effects of World War II and the arrival of American mass media further increased the influence of American English on Australian English.
